Making an emergency road kit, and checking it twice

- Bag of abrasive material, such as sand, salt, or cat litter, or traction mats
- Snow shovel and snow brush
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Window washer solvent
- Ice scraper
- Cloth or roll of paper towels
- Jumper cables
- Gloves, hats, blankets, and hand and feet warmers
- Warning devices, such as flares or triangles
- Drinking water
- Non-perishable snacks, such as energy or granola bars
- A change of warm clothes
- First-aid kit
- Basic toolkit with items including screwdrivers, pliers, and an adjustable wrench
- Mobile phone and portable phone charger, programmed with important numbers, including AAA/CAA roadside assistance
